Injured EDH Athlete Consoled by Author
by Bitsy Kemper
Tuesday, September 25th 2007
This is a story of life imitating art imitating life.
In the book Playing with the Enemy, a 15-year-old star athlete suffers a devastating ankle injury during a baseball game just as his career is taking off.
Set in the 1940s, it's the true account of how a boy handles life's curves, takes advantage of second chances. The story is also an inspirational tale of healing.
About two weeks ago when a 15-year-old star sophomore on the Oak Ridge High School football team was running for a catch during a scrimmage, he was hit from the side, heard a snap, and looked to see his foot pointing 90 degrees in the wrong direction.
Robby DeMaso, described as an athlete on the verge of becoming a breakout player, suffered almost the exact same ankle injury as Gene Moore at the exact same age, 15. Read more...
Moore's Novel Conveys Family Story and Inspires Screenplay
Story by Valerie Pascoe Photo by Antony Boshier
Tuesday, September 25th 2007
Bourbonnais author Gary Moore took a personal‚ family revelation and truly hit it out of the park with a new novel that shares the story of his father‚ Gene Moore. Not only is a major motion picture based on the book in the works‚ but Gary’s son‚ actor Toby‚ has been cast to play the role of his grandfather.
It wasn’t until the day before his father’s death in 1983 that Moore discovered his dad had been recruited by the Brooklyn Dodgers as a teenager but tragically lost his big league career due to injuries sustained in World War II while teaching German prisoners of war how to play baseball.
Moore was so astonished by the story that he spent the next two decades researching his father’s life. In September 2006 he published Playing with the Enemy: A Baseball Prodigy‚ a World at War‚ and a Field of Broken Dreams as a tribute to his father. Read more...

Show us an American who doesn't love baseball, and we'll show you an American who didn't have a childhood. Baseball happens every summer during childhood for Americans. Any space can magically be transformed into a diamond — a backyard, a back alley or a vacant lot in your neighborhood. Any number of kids of any ages can make up teams. A bat and a ball (typically a soft ball) are all the equipment required. Gloves are a treasured rarity. High spirits and loud cheering are the fare of the day. Baseball happens.Read more...

Writer chronicles his ballplayer dad's descent
By Cris Glaser, Cleveland Scene
Friday, May 24th 2007
Gary Moore reveals the lifelong secret of his dad, a teenage baseball phenom, in Playing With the Enemy. The book recaps Gene Moore’s career with the Brooklyn Dodgers in the early ’40s. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy, Gene shattered his ankle bone, causing permanent damage. The accident happened not on a World War II battlefield, but during a game with German POWs in a Louisiana prison camp. He moved to Illinois “to work on a career as an alcoholic -- and doing a good job of it,” says Gary, whose father refused to talk about the accident until the night before he died in 1983. “He looked in the mirror and saw a failed ballplayer. He felt he let everybody down.” Read more...
Playing with the Enemey Author visits school
By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN Staff Writer
May 18th 2007
MORRIS -- In unison the entire sixth grade shouted "I am a positive person. I am a force for good. I will make a positive difference. I will take control of my life," at the command of an author out to make a difference in young kids lives.
Gary Moore, author of Playing with the Enemey, spoke to the sixth-graders of Minooka Junior High May 10 after making a deal with Connor Graham, who met Moore at a book signing event in Chicago in December. At their meeting Moore promised Graham if he read his book that he would come to his literature class as part of his book report. Read more...

Author Gary Moore spoke to Jonalyn Heaton's eighth grade literature classes at Monmouth-Roseville Junior High on Monday, May 14. During each class period he stressed the importance of reading in order to be successful in life. Moore, the author of Playing with the Enemy, just released last September, is also a musician, motivational speaker, and president of Covenant Air & Water, LLC. He said that when he interviews prospective employees the first thing he asks is, "What book are you reading now?" Eighth grader Eddie Miller, when asked by the author what book he was reading at the present time, replied, "Playing with the Enemy." Moore laughingly responded, "You're hired." Read more...
Making Dreams Reality
Author keeps his promise, delivers talk in Minooka
By Peter Krowiak, Herald Reporter
Friday, May 11th 2007
MINOOKA - His own experience plays as a perfect example of his message.
“Your dreams can become your reality,” author Gary Moore said.
Moore was a guest speaker at Minooka Junior High School Thursday afternoon. His presence was the result of a kind of wager he made with one of the school's sixth-grade students, Connor Graham.
“It was pretty cool how he talked in front of the whole school,” Connor said.
Connor had met Moore at a book signing in a Borders book store in Chicago in December. Moore was signing copies of his first book, “Playing with the Enemy,” and Connor bought a copy.
At that time, Moore told Connor that if the young man finished reading the book and did a book report on it, he would visit Connor's school to “put a bow on the report.”
Connor said he was a bit skeptical about whether or not Moore would follow through with his promise and said he was surprised that he did. Read more...

MUSCATINE, Iowa — The success of Illinois resident Gary Moore’s recent book isn’t because he’s a Christian author, he insists.
Instead, he describes himself as an author who is a Christian and “writes for anyone. There are Christian principles I incorporate that people of all faiths may be touched by,” said Moore. “That’s one way I believe God is working through me.”
The 52-year-old writer, business entrepreneur, musician and motivational speaker, who resides in Bourbonnais, Ill., near Chicago, will be the guest speaker at the annual Salvation Army Civic Awards Dinner, scheduled for Friday, May 11, at the Muscatine Holiday Inn. Sports are a familiar avenue for parents to build relationships with their sons and daughters. Seeing your child's career as a shortstop, center, or midfielder develop alongside their youth is a special process, even if carting them to practices, tryouts, and tournaments can get tiresome. Sports allow dads and moms to mentor: it's often easier to get a message across about selflessness, working together, or persistence when you've got a racket or a glove in hand. It's also an opportunity for kids to learn more about their parents and to share their own history in athletics. Read more...

Dodger Minor Leaguer Taught Baseball to Germans
By Tot Holmes, Publisher
Sunday, March 25th, 2007
Gary Moore, a first-time author, does an excellent job of telling the story of his father, Gene, a highly recruited 15-year-old baseball phenomenon from a small, poor town in southern Illinois whose promising career was interrupted by World War II. The unusual book has already been snapped up by a Hollywood film company that will begin shooting the story later this year.
The story winds from small-town baseball diamonds to northern Africa, from a steamy military post in Louisiana to a minor league ballpark in Mississippi.
Moore, who lives in suburban Chicago, began the book immediately after his father survived a heart attack, realizing that he will not live forever and finally convinced him that his story should be told.

Playing with the Enemy is a great read for lovers of baseball, history buffs, or anyone who ever played catch with their father. A very personal story that collides with great historical forces, it already has been picked up by Oscar-winning producer Gerald Molen for a feature film. Think Big Fish meets Field of Dreams, with a dash of Bull Durham thrown in. The film adaptation is currently in pre-production and Gary’s son, actor Toby Moore, is slated to play his late grandfather.

WWII Baseball Story Also Tells of Life, Dad
By Dave Zweifel, editor, The Capital Times (Madison, WI)
Thursday, February 22nd, 2007
"For all sad words of tongue or pen, the saddest are these: It might have been." - John Greenleaf Whittier
That passage by the acclaimed 19th century Quaker poet not only graces the introduction to Gary Moore's Playing With the Enemy, but succinctly sums up a story that is as American as the great game of baseball itself.
Moore, a first-time author, does a masterful job of telling the story of his father, Gene, a highly recruited 15-year-old baseball phenomenon from a small, poor town in southern Illinois whose promising career was interrupted by a little something called World War II.
