Splooie...
This single word adorns one of the opening pages of Playing with the Enemy. Some don't notice it. Some ignore it, while others ask, "What is Splooie?"
I can't tell you. There are web sites promising to pull back the curtain, finally releasing the meaning. They are wrong. There are people who are convinced they have figured it out, but they fool themselves.
The secret of Splooie has been kept in Chicago and Rosemont for decades, by a band of musical brothers known as the Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps. They hold the spirit of the Green Machine. Splooie is kept in the hearts and minds of the men in green wherever they travel.
I have been given the honor and privilege to pen the foreword to a wonderful book which will be out later this fall. Building the Green Machine is the story of Don Warren and his National and World Champion Cavaliers Drum & Bugle Corps. The author, Colt Foutz has done a masterful job of capturing the heart and soul of an organization that has thrilled fans and changed boys to men since 1948.
Many of the most meaningful moments of my youth took place involved in the Drum & Bugle Corps activity, while the best of the best of those moments were as a Cavalier. I think you would enjoy knowing more and I encourage you to take a look.
